PALS 2014 -International festival for performance art

The time has come for the follow-up to the much appreciated festival PALS 2012!

The 25^th - 27^th of april Fylkingen has the great pleasure to invite you to PALS -Stockholms international performance art festival!

The core of performance art is to be found in its prescence in the now, in the unique meeting between the artist and her audience. During three days we show internationally renowned performance artists works, live -here and now.

30 artists from 12 countries participate in the festival!

During the week before the festival we are hosting a workshop run by Marilyn Arsem (USA) and Elin Wikström (Sweden) together with art students from Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Poland and USA. The students will also take part in the festival program alongside the other artists of the festival.

The festival is opened with pomp and circumstance at Fylkingen.
The fully packed performance art program goes on until midnight.

PALS bloggers

During the festival and short time after PALS web page will be updated continiously with text and image posts about performances shown on the festival.
Saulė Mažeikaitė studied art history and theory at the Vilnius Academy of Art and worked as exhibitions and projects curator, art critic, art director in different cultural institutions in Lithuania. Her articles have been published in Lithuanians’ culture portals and newspapers. Now she works as cultural attaché at the Embassy of Lithuania in Stockholm.

Edvin Sandström is preparing his phd in Sociology at Uppsala University and has since 2011 been conducting research on performance art. He has written about how performance art can serve as communicative practice and its methodological opportunities within qualitative research. Edvin's current focus concentrates on festivals as sites of (re)production of performance art.

Marilyn Arsem has been creating live events since 1975, from solo gallery performances to large-scale, site-specific works. Arsem has presented work at festivals, conferences, alternative spaces, galleries, museums and universities in North and South America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
Most recently she has focused on creating site-specific performances, often in the context of festivals. These works are not planned in advance, but made in response to a location that is selected on arrival.

She is a member (and founder) of Mobius, Inc., a Boston-based collaborative of interdisciplinary artists. As a full-time faculty member at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, she heads the Performance Area and is a Graduate Advisor.

Elin Wikström (Sweden)

Elin Wikström’s art practice deals with being subjected to constructed situations and has the format of interventions in various venues, spaces or context. Negotiation and participatory-driven processes are keywords in her art practice. The acts and speech acts that she’s carrying out are often everyday life actions with a twist or simple actions that are repeated in absurdum. For Elin Wikström working in this format is an attempt to questions norms, values and logics for how we speak, think and act, on an individual level as well as in society at large and to trigger reflections on current social, political, environmental and cultural issues. The reasons for her behind developing such methods have been an effort to representing individuals and groups as active subjects able to critically question and change their understanding of themselves and the world around them in order to become aware of conditions they previously had less knowledge and experience of. What is motivating Elin Wikström to further develop artistic methods within this field is that wherever societal transformations take place, small or large, there is consequently a compelling need for individuals and communities to actively participate in decision-making processes.

Internationell festival för performancekonst 25-27 april på Fylkingen

Nu är det dags för uppföljaren till den mycket uppskattade festivalen PALS 2012!

Den 25-27:e april har Fylkingen den stora glädjen att bjuda in till PALS -Stockholms internationella performancekonst festival!

Performancekonstens kärna står att finna i dess närvaro i nuet,i det unika mötet mellan konstnären och hennes publik. Under tre dagar visar vi internationellt erkända performancekonstnärers verk live -här och nu.

Vi har sammanfört konstnärer i olika åldrar, från olika länder och sammanhang som ett led i det ständigt pågående sammanlänkande av olika kontexter som pågår på den internationella performancekonstscenen.

Under upptaktsveckan till festivalen håller vi en workshop där ett antal erfarna konstnärer arbetar tillsammans med konststudenter från Sverige, Finland, Norge, Danmark, Polen och USA. Studenterna kommer även att programläggas jämsides med festivalens övriga konstnärer.

Programmet i korthet:

Festivalen inleds med pompa och ståt på Fylkingen.

Det fullmatade performance programmet sträcker sig till midnatt.

Lördag 26/4 kl. 18.00-24.00 Performance Kulturnatt!

Performancefestival på Fylkingen som en del av Kulturnatt Stockholm.

Söndag 27/4 kl. 12.00 – 16.00.Performance på Slussen!

Festivalen avslutas på söndagen med performance i det offentliga rummet – på Södermalmstorg/Slussen.

TVÅ VANDRINGAR. SÄLLSKAP: DERSU, MADAM THÉVENOT OCH ELI – DEN GAMLE MANNEN. PACKNING: EN KARTA, EN BAGUETTE OCH EN KUNDVAGN.

Som mitt bidrag till festivalen PALS 2014 arrangerar jag två vandringar som ur skilda perspektiv undersöker området runt Slussen. Den första, för fot och rullstolsburna, kl 15.00, lördag 26 april, har diskriminerande otillgänglighet som tema, leds av Kerstin Alksten som arbetar med att utomhusmiljön ska bli mer tillgänglig för grupper med olika funktionsnedsättningar. Den andra, kl 15.00, söndag 27 april, är en fotvandring till några avsides belägna platser i svår terräng, som Conny Lind en pensionär från Söder, kartlagt, fotograferat och publicerat på nätet.
Syftet med vandringarna är att utforska omgivningarna, njuta av väder och vind och varandras sällskap. Hur uppfattas platserna som besöks under vandringarna? Vad är en bra utomhusmiljö? Generellt och utifrån tillgänglighets-aspekten? Hur utformas den? Av vem? För vem? Båda vandringarna kommer att innehålla performativa element, pågå en och halv timme med ett kortare stopp där det bjuds på färdkost.

Förutom festival publiken och konstnärerna som medverkar i PALS 2014 har representanter från; Södermalms stadsdelsnämnds (ansvariga för park, miljö, trafik och omsorg), Södermalms funktionsråd, organisationer för personer med funktionsnedsättningar, arkitektutbildningarna KTH och Mejan Arc, Färgfabriken och Statens Konstråd bjudits in.

Verkets titel refererar till filmer med starkt fokus på vandring i handlingen; Vägvisaren (Kurosawa 1975), Borgerskapets diskreta charm (Bunuel 1972) och Vägen (Hillcoat, 2009, efter Cormac Mc Carthys bok med samma namn)

OBS! Samling vid Stadsmuseets hiss, utanför muséet på Ryssgården, Södermalms torg. Färdtjänst kan köra till Peter Myndes Backe 3.

TWO WALKS. COMPANY: DERSU, MADAM THÉVENOT AND ELI – THE OLD MAN. PACKING; A MAP, A BAGUETTE AND A SHOPPING CHART.

As my contribution to PALS 2014 I will arrange two walks examining the area around Slussen from two different perspectives. The first, by foot and wheelchair, 3 pm, Saturday April 26, has discriminatory inaccessibility as its theme and is lead by Kerstin Alksten who works with making outdoor environments more accessible for groups with different disabilities. The second, 3 pm, Sunday April 27, is a walking tour to a couple of remote places in difficult terrain which Conny Lind a senior from Söder has mapped, photographed and published on the Internet.

The aim with the walks is to explore the surroundings, enjoy the weather, wind and each other’s company. What are the functions and meanings of urban landscapes? What is a good outdoor fenvironment, generally and from the aspect of accessibility? How are they designed, by whom and for whom? Both tours will go on for one and a half hour, with a shorter stop for snacks and include performative elements.

A part from the festival audience, the artists participating in PALS 2014, representatives from; municipal district council of Södermalm (responsible for parks, green areas, traffic and social services) and various organisations for groups with disabilities, architectural and city-planning educations at KTH and Mejan Arc, Färgfabriken and The Swedish Art Council have been invited.

The title of the work refers to films with a strong focus on walking in the plot; Dersu Usala (Kurosawa 1975), The Discrete Charm of the Bourgoisie (Bunuel 1972) and The Road (Hillcoat, 2009, after Cormac Mc Carthy’s book with the same name).

Please note that the gatherings at 3 o’clock will take place at the elevator located outside, in front of the Stockholm City Museum, at Ryssgården, Södermalms torg. Mobility service can drive to Peter Myndes Backe 3.
